TEN TIGERS RECEIVE NORTH DIVISION ACCOLADES

Booneville, Miss. - Northeast Mississippi Community College’s softball program continues to rewrite its historical records after another prosperous campaign.

The Tigers had 10 student-athletes that were picked for Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) All-North Division honors. It is the most individual accolades of any ball club in the league this season.

It is also the top amount of recipients for Northeast since the conference consolidated from three divisions to two. The Tigers previously had nine selections in 2012 after finishing in third place at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 23 Tournament.

“Our kids really stepped up,” said Northeast head coach Jody Long. “I’m very pleased with the effort and the commitment that this group brought to the team. I saw them get more and more confident as the season went along.”

A freshman heads the list of Tigers that were recognized. Chelsea Gates earned a spot on the MACJC All-North Division first-team after a brilliant campaign as the leadoff hitter on the lineup card for Northeast.

Gates utilized her dynamic speed to post team-highs of 29 runs and 13 stolen bases in as many tries. She swiped a career-best three bags in a thrilling extra inning win against rival Itawamba Community College on February 28.

The Houston native had perhaps her finest performance of the year at Northwest Mississippi Community College. She had seven hits, three RBIs and two doubles in a doubleheader split with the Rangers.

She was also instrumental in helping Northeast secure a berth in the state playoffs during a victory at Holmes Community College. Gates did all the damage for the Tigers with a pair of RBI doubles in a one-run decision over the Bulldogs.

A trio of Northeast standouts ranging from the outfield to behind the plate in Haley Christian, Yasmeen Cooper and Maggie Martin were recipients of MACJC All-North Division second-team awards.

Christian transformed herself into one of the preeminent catchers in the country with a powerful arm. She threw out 14 runners attempting to steal, which ranked third in the nation and led the MACJC.

She gunned a runner trying to advance for five consecutive games at one point this campaign. Christian also had 23 straight errorless outings for the Tigers prior to the postseason.

The Corinth High School graduate increased her productivity offensively as well. She more than doubled her RBI total from one year ago to 22 as a sophomore and added 31 base knocks to her resume.

Cooper was a well-rounded athlete that could be inserted almost anywhere on the diamond. She started at five different positions, including catcher, designated player, second base, shortstop and right field, during her final season at Northeast.

The Houston High School alumna paced the Tigers at the dish with team-bests of a .337 batting average, .457 on-base percentage, 25 RBIs, 21 walks and 12 extra base hits.

She notched 10 multiple hit showings this year for Northeast. Cooper also reached safely for 17 contests in a row beginning near the end of March and extending through the Tigers’ playoff series at East Central Community College one month later.

Martin consistently improved as the campaign progressed and found a permanent home with the Tigers at second base. She was solid with her glove and made only eight errors in 107 overall chances.

She batted .247 and tied with five other ladies for the largest quantity of doubles on Northeast’s crew with seven. Martin registered her inaugural collegiate triple in a run-rule triumph versus Northwest on the last day of the regular season.

The Baldwyn product had possibly her greatest afternoon of the year at Coahoma Community College. She scored four runs and had a pair of doubles during Northeast’s road sweep.

Six more women were acknowledged for their positive roles with the Tigers during the 2015 campaign by receiving MACJC All-North Division honorable mention laurels.

Whittney Gee became known as a dependable player over the past two seasons in left field. She had the most putouts with 39 and also compiled the highest fielding percentage of any outfielder for Northeast at .978.

Vardaman’s Gee went on a tear during an eight-game road trip by the Tigers in the middle of the year. She went 14 for 26 with 10 runs and 10 RBIs to lift Northeast to an even mark against four separate opponents.

She blasted two homers as well during that stretch away from the City of Hospitality in two victories versus Mississippi Delta Community College at University Field on the grounds of Delta State University.

Madison Gillean had a number of timely at bats for the Tigers during her initial campaign on the Booneville campus. She had a RBI double that brought in a key insurance run in Northeast’s triumph at Itawamba on March 27.

Gillean, who is originally from Winnsboro, Texas, crushed a two-run opposite field dinger that pushed the Tigers ahead for good in a critical conference victory at Northwest.

She also accounted for the game-winning run when Northeast met Mississippi Delta in the first matchup of a double dip at the all-turf Corinth High School Softball Complex. Gillean knocked a liner into right-centerfield with the bases loaded to complete an exciting walkoff decision over the Trojans.

Mackenzie Riley showcased her stealth when she got on base for Northeast. She was among the top five Tigers in the categories of runs scored with 18 and stolen bases with eight.

Baldwyn’s Riley worked her way into the centerfield slot because of her defensive prowess. She accrued 34 putouts and seven assists, which was the most of any Northeast outfielder.

She joined Shannon Goode as one of just two slappers on the Tigers’ roster. Riley took advantage of that with numerous successful bunts for either base hits or sacrifices.

Avery Springer was the only member of Northeast’s squad to participate in all 36 contests. She was a catalyst for the Tigers with a team-best 39 hits, including 10 of them for extra bases.

She struck out on only six occasions in 131 times that she stepped into the batters box. Springer aided Northeast in turning 12 double plays while a .965 fielding percentage. Springer, who attended Houston High School, had a season-high 12-game hitting streak for the Tigers that spanned across two months. She had a .416 batting average during that interval with 10 RBIs and five doubles. Brittany Taylor was dominant at the opening of her inaugural season at Northeast with four wins in her initial six starts. She closed the campaign with a team-high nine victories in 94.2 innings of action. Taylor was named the NJCAA Division II Pitcher of the Week thanks to a splendid outing against Mississippi Delta in which she amassed 10 strikeouts compared to zero walks. The West Union High School grad was the third Tiger to attain this distinction. Erin Dixson, who went on to star at Eckerd (Fla.) College and current Northeast assistant coach Jaisa Emerson are the only others in this elite group with Taylor. Alyssa Vanlandingham developed into the ace of Northeast’s pitching staff with a team-best 2.20 earned run average (ERA) in 18 appearances. She accumulated a 7-8 ledger with two saves as well. The left-hander from Hampton, Ark., was tabbed as the MACJC Pitcher of the Week after a masterful nine-inning complete game versus Itawamba in which she punched out three batters and conceded just three runs. Vanlandingham signed with the University of Tennessee at Martin following the conclusion of her sophomore year. She is the fifth Tiger to ink with a NCAA Division I institution and the first since Lisa Jansen and Shanika Randle both chose to enroll at Mississippi Valley State University in 2008. This batch of ladies guided Northeast to the MACJC State Playoffs for the fifth consecutive campaign and the 14th time in its 15 years at the fast-pitch level.
