ELLISVILLE – For the second straight year, a Jones College product has been selected in the first round of the NFL Draft.
Javon Kinlaw, who played the 2016 season for the Bobcats, was taken by the San Francisco 49ers with the 14th pick in the opening round Thursday night. The selection was announced by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
Last year, former Bobcat safety Johnathan Abram was taken in the first round by the Oakland Raiders.
Kinlaw, a 6-foot-6, 310-pound defensive tackle, was named a first-team Associated Press All-American this past season after posting 35 tackles, 6.0 sacks, four quarterback hurries, two pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and one blocked kick. He was named SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week for his play in South Carolina's 20-17 upset over Georgia.
Kinlaw was named a USA Today second-team All-American, first-team All-Southeastern Conference by the SEC coaches and second-team All-SEC by AP. Pro Football Focus named him as second-team All-SEC and third-team All-American.
Kinlaw, who is from Goose Creek, South Carolina, was named a second-team NJCAA All-American following his season at Jones. He was a first-team All-Region 23 and first-team All-MACJC selection. He was named the MACJC's South Division Most Valuable Defensive Lineman that season. He posted 26 tackles, 4.5 sacks and four tackles for loss in 2016.
Kinlaw becomes the third Bobcat to be selected in the first round and the 14th Bobcat to be selected in the NFL Draft.
